About Us

GLEIF is a non-profit organization established in 2014 by the Financial Stability Board. Our mission is to enhance transparency in the global marketplace by managing the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) system. Based in Basel, we maintain the Global LEI Index—an open, accurate, and up-to-date source of information on legal entities worldwide.

We work closely with a global network of (v)LEI issuers and continue to drive innovation, including the development of the verifiable LEI (vLEI), to enable secure and trusted digital identity verification across borders, industries, and regulatory frameworks.

GLEIF has pioneered a new form of digitized organizational identity to meet the global need for automated authentication and verification of legal entities across a range of industries: the verifiable LEI (vLEI).

vLEI Hackathon:

GLEIF invites developers, entrepreneurs, policy stakeholders and innovators around the world to take part in the vLEI Hackathon and explore its potential across three key thematic areas:
-       Theme 1: Digital Assets & Financial Infrastructure
-       Theme 2: Industry 4.0, Commercial & Finance Processes & Operations (Currently Viewing)
-       Theme 3: Trade, Supply Chain Resilience, and SME Finance

Problem Statements

Theme 2: Industry, Commercial & Finance Processes & Operations

The identity of companies, their officers, as well as machines, data or even AI agents they control increasingly require secure, interoperable and digital means to be verified. From the most basic tasks of onboarding suppliers and credit risk assessments, to managing complex processes in smart manufacturing and the use of AI-led tools, markets need interoperable solutions to verify identity, legitimate rights and check for the provenance and integrity of data.

Click on the problem statement you are interested in to learn more about it.

1. Identity and re-use KYB credentials for Commerce and Banking

How to integrate the vLEI to source verified data for conducting KYB on new clients or trading partners?

Task:

Build business applications that integrate vLEI credentials into everyday commercial operations, enabling more automated and robust KYB processes for banks to onboard SME clients and for businesses to manage supplier relationships. Your solution should demonstrate how vLEI can serve as a universal business identifier that streamlines operations while providing verifiable access controls and data sharing capabilities across jurisdictions. It can also demonstrate how government registries or agencies can use their own vLEIs to sign data and attestations issued by them as verifiable credentials and enable those data artefacts to retain integrity and provenance while being further exchanged long the KYB process.

Implementation goals:

- Integrate vLEI credentials into core business operational platforms (procurement, invoicing, accounting, or banking systems)
- Demonstrate automated KYB workflows that leverage company registry data and vLEI verification
- Show role-based access management for business staff using vLEI credentials
- Include verifiable data sharing or document signing capabilities between business parties
- Propose how government registries can use the vLEI to sign and issue data and attestations for integration in KYB processes

2. Safe and scalable integration with Machines, IoT Devices & AI

How to use vLEI credentials to define company rights over objects and assets and enable their verification for purposes of commercial transactions and security?

Develop solutions or services that enable parties to link the identity of companies and officers through their vLEI to machines, devices or other assets such as AI Agents. Solutions should enable companies managing services or sharing data to exercise and prove control over those assets, link control to payments or other commercial operations; the solutions should also demonstrate the capacity for users of machines to verify who provides and controls those assets, e.g. verifying an AI agent or caller ID
There is additional interest in how to systematically link existing machine serial numbers or other identifiers to the vLEI for scalable deployment of identity solutions for industry

3. Harness trusted granular data for ESG reporting

How to use the vLEI to track the provenance and integrity of granular ESG data or reports submitted to authorities or investors?

Build ESG reporting solutions that use vLEI credentials to establish data provenance and enable verifiable sustainability reporting across complex supply chains. Your solution should demonstrate how companies can trace ESG data from source to final reporting, particularly focusing on Scope 3 emissions and supplier sustainability data, while providing assurance frameworks that enhance transparency for regulators, investors, and stakeholders.

Implementation goals:

- Implement vLEI credential integration for ESG data submission and verification
- Demonstrate end-to-end data provenance tracking from suppliers through to final ESG reports using vLEI and associated identifiers
- Show how delegated vLEI credentials can enable reporting from various organizational levels
- Include verifiable data signing and submission processes for regulatory and investor reporting
