About Us
GLEIF is a non-profit organization established in 2014 by the Financial Stability Board. Our mission is to enhance transparency in the global marketplace by managing the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) system. Based in Basel, we maintain the Global LEI Index—an open, accurate, and up-to-date source of information on legal entities worldwide.
We work closely with a global network of (v)LEI issuers and continue to drive innovation, including the development of the verifiable LEI (vLEI), to enable secure and trusted digital identity verification across borders, industries, and regulatory frameworks.
GLEIF has pioneered a new form of digitized organizational identity to meet the global need for automated authentication and verification of legal entities across a range of industries: the verifiable LEI (vLEI).

GLEIF invites developers, entrepreneurs, policy stakeholders and innovators around the world to take part in the vLEI Hackathon and explore its potential across three key thematic areas:

To support teams developing proposals for the Global vLEI Hackathon, GLEIF is offering a comprehensive technical enablement program throughout the registration and development phases. This program includes:

Problem Statements
Theme 3: Trade, Supply Chain Resilience & SME Finance
Trade and financing require often repeated, costly verifications of companies, their products, delivery risks and other attributes. Trusted, verifiable identity of legal entities and their officers can enable many data credentials, attributes and documents to be shared on a peer-to-peer basis without sacrificing potential to ascertain ownership, provenance and integrity.

1. Digitize Trade documents, processes and finance
How to enhance the digitization and interoperability of trade finance process using the vLEI and data chaining?
Task:
Build trade finance solutions that leverage vLEI's identity model to streamline client onboarding, automate risk assessment, and enable secure asset tokenization. Your solution should demonstrate how reusable vLEI identity verification can eliminate redundant due diligence processes while enabling advanced digital asset management and settlement mechanisms for trade finance operations.
Implementation goals:
- Implement vLEI-based client onboarding that demonstrates reusable identity across multiple trade finance processes
- Show automated risk assessment and monitoring using vLEI credentials
- Include asset tokenization integration using either smart contract allowlists or key-level vLEI integration
- Demonstrate integration with payment and settlement mechanisms
2. Empower SMEs with control over their identity and data to enhance access to finance
How to use vLEI and related data credentials to address bottlenecks in onboarding SMEs and to conduct risk assessment and monitoring?
Task:
Build solutions that use vLEI credentials to enable banks and other lenders to more easily obtain and verify the integrity and origin of data that will be used to conduct due diligence, risk assessments and risk management of outstanding debts. Your solutions can consider how to enable issuance and decentralized used of government sourced data, such as from credit registries, collateral registries or tax databases as well as from private information sources such as banks, payment services or e-commerce platforms.
Implemenatation goals:
- Implement vLEI-based customer identifiers and identifiers for issuers of data about SMEs that can be used across different platforms
- Show how verifiable identities and data can be stored and managed in ACDC formats to enable machine readable high assurance processes
- Include tools or credential and identity mapping solutions that facilitate access to government held databases
- Demonstrate integration with existing client management, transaction, loan or invoice finance and factoring management systems
3. Enhance transparency and trust in supply chains
How to use the GLEIF network and vLEI to support transparency and traceability across supply chains?
Task:
Create supply chain management solutions that integrate vLEI credentials into trade document (from one or more listed in the KTDDE as publised here: https://www.dsi.iccwbo.org/_files/ugd/8e49a6_9f8444133fc64fc9b59fc2eaaca2888e.pdf) production, government service delivery, and export certification processes.
Your solution should demonstrate how the vLEI can simplify secure data sharing across supply chain networks while maintaining "never trust, always verify" security principles through continuous identity verification and provenance monitoring.
Implementation goals:
- Integrate vLEI credentials into supply chain management systems and trade document workflows
- Implement continuous identity verification with connections to original data sources and watcher/observer networks
- Demonstrate automated trade document generation or integration, covering Key Trade Documents and Data Elements
- Show how partial service elements can contribute to broader supply chain ecosystem interoperability

or remotely at a Global Digital Org ID Forum on November 7th in Hong Kong, during HK Fintech Week.
Eligibility
The Hackathon is open to natural persons aged 18+ and individual or groups of (i) firms, associations, foundations or other legal entities that (ii) develop and/or operate innovative
digital solutions that harness digital organizational identity to enhance financial, commercial, compliance or other analytics, processes or operations and (iii) who have an element of innovation or novel application of technology serving common good. Participants from all backgrounds and geographies are
welcome.
Employees of Sponsoring institutions and their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, fulfilment or other coordinating agencies, individuals providing services to Sponsors through an outsourcer or temporary employment agency during the Hackathon period, are eligible to participate in the Hackathon in their individual capacity or as an independent entity subject to furnishing of permission from their/its Sponsor.
Participants must meet the Eligibility Criteria in order to register for the Hackathon. If Participant is found not eligible or fails to meet the Eligibility Criteria at any time during the period of the Hackathon, Participant’s proposal(s) and/or technical solution will not be evaluated, and Participant will not be eligible for shortlisting or final evaluation, or for any Award. The decision of GLEIF shall be final and no correspondence shall be entertained in whatsoever manner in
this regard.
FAQ
Who can apply?
Anyone - Individuals (eighteen years and above) and enterprises (including startups) from all geographies are welcome to apply under this global challenge.
How do I register and submit my proposed solution(s)?
You may click on the Join Now button on the top of this webpage and complete the registration questionnaire before the registration deadline (29.08.2025) with details of your proposal in the relevant sections of the questionnaire.
Is there a limit on the number of members in a team?
No. There is no such
restriction. But all members of a team must be clearly listed and a lead participant nominated to be the contracting party.
Are there any other requirements?
Yes, along with your application, you will need to consent to both the Terms and Conditions of the GLEIF vLEI Hackathon 2025 and the APIX Terms of Use during the registration process.
Must I be a registered company/firm to participate?
You need not be a registered firm for participation in the hackathon.
How many problem statements can I apply for?
You can submit one proposal per problem statement. You can submit proposals for all the problem statements.
Can I submit multiple entries?
Yes you may participate in solving multiple problem statements. However, please note only one proposal is accepted from an organization for a particular problem statement. Please ensure therefore, that the best solution is put forward. An organization can submit proposals for all the problem statements.
Is there a cost associated to participate?
The hackathon is free of charge for teams/participants.
Do I need to submit a solution after being shortlisted?
Yes, the shortlisted entities need to submit a demo or prototype and a presentation which would be evaluated to decide the winners.
How will the winning proposals be selected?
There will be two rounds of evaluation. Proposals will first be reviewed by the organisers and our appointed agents. This is to shortlist the most promising participants to enter into the demo or prototype development phase of the hackathon. The shortlisted participants will subsequently submit their demo or prototype and presentation to be assessed by a panel of independent expert judges convened by the organisers.
What is the deadline for registrations?
All participants should register their team by Friday, 23:59 CET on 29th August, 2025.
Will the information shared be kept confidential?
Information provided to us through the online application will be shared only on a need-to-know basis within the relevant event and evaluation teams. The information provided will be retained by us post the program for audit purposes and will not be shared without obtaining explicit permission from the applicant / authorized team member.
Are the participants allowed to leverage their own Integrated Development Environments (IDEs)?
The participants can choose to develop the solution via APIX or use their own IDEs. But if they are using their own IDEs then they will have to bring the code, compile it, run it on APIX, and present the running code before the judges for evaluation. Participants that wish to use an IDE provided by APIX contribute a fee for the use of the IDE for the duration of the Hackathon. Can I request for re-evaluation in case I am not satisfied with the Judges' decision?
No. Applicants cannot request for re-evaluation. The decision of the judges shall be final and binding. GLEIF reserves all rights with respect to the event.
Who owns the code developed during the hackathon?
Entities/Teams have full ownership of the solution proposed and any prototype that they build and host on the APIX Platform. The host of the hackathon and APIX have no ownership of your IP.
